Born - Gowanda, Erie County N.Y. May 24, 1858 (from MSS diaries) There is some confusion as to his date of death - paper gives 10 Sep, one version gives 14 and another 15 Sep, 15 Sep 1930, is from the 4 generation chart by Bart Green, etc. Also showed his birth as 24 May 1858. Living in Ithaca, New York, USA, 1869. Living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, 1881. From a sketch by his brother, probably about 1944: '... was born on a farm in Erie County, New York where he lived until 1869 when the family moved to Ithaca, New York to take advantage of the educational facilities of that town. He graduated from the high school there and later took lectures at Cornell University. Aside from his studies he gained quite a business experience in selling the products of the vegetable and fruit farm operated by his father. ... (Joseph) was a member of the Society of Friends or Quakers ... (Prudence) came from a long line of New England stock and her parents were Baptists. In later life George H. and his family identified themselves with the Unitarian Church. ... He married 30 December 1880 Mary Arathusia Snow (born 10 December 1857, died 21 August 1943) daughter of James Snow and Sarah Jane Taft. ... (Mary) was a student he met while at school. In August 1881 he came to Colorado Springs and joined his brother Melvin M. Sinton and cousin Louis A. Bartlett who were conducting a small dairy located on East Willamette Avenue. A short time later Mr. Bartlett retired after which the business was conducted under the firm name of Sinton Bros. The business was enlarged rapidly and has grown steadily since that time. At one time business was merged with the Rustic Home Dairy under the name of the Sinton-Rustic Home Dairy Company. Later it took the name of the Sinton Dairy Company and it is still a corporation under that title. Great changes have taken place since George H. Sinton located here. In the early days of his residence here the dairies were run in a very crude manner. The cows ran at large on the prairies east of the city in the summertime and were rounded up and yarded for milking and for the night. Milking was generally done in the open corrals during the summertime, the cows remaining outdoors all of the time. The proper care of milk was not understood at that time and it was hard to keep it from souring. Few people had refrigerators and most dairies made two deliveries each day during hot weather. George made a study of the care and handling of milk and soon overcame many of these early difficulties. He was one of the first to change to the use of bottles instead of the earlier way of pouring or dipping the milk into the receptacles of the patrons. The dairy was among the first to use alfalfa and corn silage. Purebred sires were used from the start and breeding for vigor and high butterfat content of the milk was stressed. Mr. Sinton took an interest in public affairs but was not partisan. He served one term as a member of the board of Aldermen. "Because of failing health he moved to Pasadena, California, in 1917, but retained his interest in the Company until his death. He was active in the business for 36 years. After his retirement his oldest son, Herbert G. Sinton, took his place as manager of the Sales Department and later he secured a controlling interest in the Company. George spent most of the active years of his life in the organization and management of the Sinton dairy which is now (1944) probably the oldest established business in Colorado Springs. He had a host of friends and his relations with his employees was very satisfactory, many of them remaining with the Company through the years. George H. Sinton was a man of integrity and high moral character and he lived an active and useful life. He died at his home in Pasadena, California, September 15, 1930 at the age of 72.'
