Joseph Sinton (O'Brien), aged 75 Photograph courtesy of Joy H. Jones, Colorado Springs
Changed name to Sinton in 1854 at the request of his mother, Anne (Greeves) O'Brien, Joseph dropped the name O'Brien and used his middle name for his family name. He was named for his Uncle Joseph Sinton, rather his mother's Uncle. His brother Thomas Emlyn O'Brien also took the name Sinton. They were the only surviving children, except Maria, who by that time had married F.C. Candee. "The name change came about when Anne's grandchildren were starting to be born, to spare them from the new wave of Irish/Catholic persecution then starting". She had been badly scared on several occasions as a young wife and mother in Buffalo and did not want her grandchildren to go through that. News of his birth went to Ireland and in Letter, 23, 9mo 1820, PS dated 9mo 30th, from Philadelphia, ."... Mary Greeves told of an addition to W & A O'Brien family...."
