Born: 8/4/1853 Brighton, Victoria Died: 2/20/1925 Subiaco, Western Australia Birth attended by his father (William) - no medical attendant was present and there was no regular nurse Notes: "Victoria and its Metropolis: Past and Present. Vol 2. 1888, p. 642" Hewitt and Smethurst, Malvern and Richmond. Mr. Joseph James Hewitt, the senior partner of the above firm, was born in 1853 at Brighton, Victoria, and lived in that borough for sixteen years, with the exception of two or three years spent in mining pursuits. Having adopted the building trade, he started contracting in 1875, and from that time has been constantly engaged in building, principally in the suburbs. Mr. John Smethurst was born 6th July 1862, at Richmond, Victoria, and a contractor by training and calling; he learned his business from his father, and about two years after the latter's death, began business on his own account. He entered into partnership with Mr. J.J. Hewitt (to whom he had been foreman) in 1886. Mr. Smethurst was one of the promoters, and is still a director, of the Austalian Natives' Permanent Building Society. The firm have establishments at Thanet-street, Malvern, and Lennox-street, Richmond. "Drove (ca 1885) a camel train from Melbourne to Perth with no loss of camels, men or goods. (He rested every 7th day, not necessarily a Sunday). Other drivers pushed straight through and suffered very heavy losses. But 9 months to the day of his arrival Roy was born."
