John Sinton, founder of the Tandragee building contractors firm, has died at the age of 81. Mr. Sinton, of 29 Madden Road, Tandragee, was born in nearby Cabra in 1904, and won his first contract - for Markethill Primary School - in 1927. Since then he had built the business into a thriving enterprise, undertaking contracts throughout the region. Some of the major projects he carried out include the first factory and school in Craigavon, St. Columha's Parish Church and the new Portadown Railway Station. Mr. Sinton remained chairman of the company until his death, when he employed over 100 workers TRADE Mr. Sinton was involved in dozens of organisations on a local, county and province-wide basis. In the building trade, he was a founder member of the Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors. A member of Tandragee Urban District Council until its dissolution in 1973, he was its chairman from 1962-65. He and Mr. Alwyn White donated the mayor's chain of office, which will shortly be displayed in Tandragee Junior High School. Involved with young people throughout his life, Mr. Sinton was associated with Tandragee Boy Scouts and other youth organisations. A major in the Home Guard during the war, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army Cadets and commanded the cadets in the County Armagh and South Down area for which he received the MBE in 1969. Mr. Sinton was also a prominent member of various branches of the Masonic Order, the Orange Order and the Black Institution. He was a member of RBP 89 and honoured with a long service medal for over 60 years service last year. He was also a Past Master and Past District Master. He was the first chairman of the British Empire Cancer Research campaign and the area organiser for County Armagh. He provided the first car for district nurses before the founding of the health boards. A member of Armagh Rotary Club, his business expertise was recognised when he was asked to become a founder member of Enterprise Ulster. Although Mr Sinton worked with and helped Tandragee youth all his life, he was also concerned about the aged and was a founder member of Tandragee Comforts Fund for old people. CHURCHES He was associated with both Tandragee and Mullavilly Parish Churches, and his remains were received at a short service on Sunday, followed by a funeral service on Monday at Ballymore Parish Church. Presiding at the service were Archdeacon Fred Gowing and Canon Robert Wilkinson, and interment was at the adjoining Ballymore churchyard. Mr. Sinton is survived by his wife Marion, son Maynard, daughters Mrs. Winifred Gillespie, and Mrs. Laura Mehaffy, and four grandsons. INVESTORS IN PEOPLE AWARD Tandragee company receives top training accolade Tandragee building company John Sinton Limited has become the latest recipient of an Investors in People (IiP) award. The new Accident and Emergency department of the Craigavon Area Hospital was the venue for the award ceremony, which was attended by representatives from the Hospital Trust, Construction Employers Federation, Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as well as many architects and surveyors. The £0.75m extension was completed in eight months following close co-operation between John Sinton Ltd and the hospital, which ensured minimal disruption to the ongoing operations of the existing A&E unit. Roger Gillespie, MD of John Sinton Ltd, commented: "We are very proud to receive this award. Joining the top 25% of UK companies who hold this particular award gives us great pleasure and the directors firmly believe that investing in the right people contributes greatly to the success of a company. CITB Regional Manager, Brian Walker, congratulated the company on the achievement, and added: "This standard is a respected badge of quality that will be appreciated by both staff and potential staff, customers and investors. John Sinton have clearly demonstrated that in today's increasingly competitive construction industry, investing in your workforce through training is essential to business success.
