GENERAL NOTES
William Henry Taft was a blacksmith in Caroline Center, and built and operated a small general store there. He enlisted as 2nd lieutenant in Company K of the 137th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, in the Union Army, and died of typhoid fever shortly after enlistment and mustering near Harper's Ferry. Prior to enlistment he was a blacksmith. He built and maintained a small store in Caroline Center, NY, and is buried in Caroline Center.
No children.

Pleasant Valley was a rest location for the Union Army after the Battle of Antietam, and the scene depicts the temporary residence of General McClellan's wife, among Generals McClellan and Burnside's staff, and their wives.
