He attended college for over 8 years with degrees in Business and Finance, Aero Space Engineering as well as computer programming.

He was instrumental in the development and flight of the Titan Missle while with Martin Marietta.

The Martin Marietta Corporation was an American company founded in 1961 through the merger of Glenn L. Martin Company and American-Marietta Corporation. The combined company became a leader in chemicals, aerospace, and electronics. In 1995, it merged with Lockheed Corporation to form Lockheed Martin.

Obituary published in the Colorado Springs Gazette on Saturday 31 August 1999 reads

HUGH VERNON SKEELS, 85, a former longtime Colorado Springs resident, died July 29, 1999 at a Lakewood care center. He was a postal supervisor and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Skeels was born May 5, 1914, in Jefferson, Neb. He was married Nov. 29, 1946, to Mary-Jo Sinton.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Nancy-Jo Skeels, Judith Lynne Skeels and Carol Marie Haines; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, 3500 S. Logan St., Englewood. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Ave. Aspen Mortuaries, 1350 Simms St., Lakewood, (303) 232-0985, is handling arrangements.
