Birth - Carleton Maternity Home, Portadown, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland.
First job was as Merchant Navy Radio Officer with Alfred Holt & Co., Liverpool, England. Sailed on Blue Funnel and Glen Line cargo/passsanger vessels to Japan, Phillipines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaya and Ceylon.
Worked for Short Brothers & Harland Ltd, in the Missile Trials Team on Seacat, Tigercat and Blowpipe missile systems. Spent five years as field engineer attached to the Imperial Iranian Air Force at Vahdatti Air Force Base, Dezful, Iran.
Worked in the Radio Workshops section of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and later transferred to the Computer Services section with special resposibility for HOLMES major incident systems.
