To view the 1900 US Census record for George see 1900 Census [RFSS Mar 2011] News item in the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph on Thursday 25 May 1939 reads SINTON RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD Given 'Progressive Holstein Breeder No. 1' Rating by Association George T. Sinton of Colorado Springs Wednesday was designated progressive Holstein breeder No. 1 in the United States by the Holstein-Friesian Association of America. Only four other dairymen in the country have won the title of progressive breeder to date. Sinton will be given a certificate as evidence of this special recognition at a national convention of dairymen In New York in June. To qualify for this honor, a dairyman must have a herd average of at least 480 pounds of butterfat in a year of official testing, when the cows are milked three times daily, according to Elmer J. Meadows, dairyman of Colorado State college extension service. Sinton's herd of 18 registered cows last year produced an average of 512 pounds of butterfat per cow. To win such an award it also is necessary that the herd be officially classified for type and average 80 points. Sinton's herd averaged 81.7 points. Another qualification is that 75 per cent of the cows must have been of the dairyman's own breeding. In the Colorado Springs herd this percentage is 94.4. The last requirement is that a herd be TB accredited and free of Bang's disease. Mr. Sinton bought his first cows in 1910, started testing in 1911, began official testing in 1913 and has continued both tests to date. These testing records have greatly aided him in making a success as a breeder. His herd has produced the highest testing Holstein milk in the United States during the last two years - an average of 4.1 per cent butterfat. He has sold breeding stock from his herd to 195 persons in Colorado and nine other states. Almost every Holstein herd in the state has been influenced by his breeding program.
