Ex-Sinton Dairy Chairman, banker Gray dies at age 72

John William Gray, former general manager, president and chairman of the board of Sinton Dairy, died Saturday in Colorado Springs. He was 72.

According to El Paso County Coroner Dr. David Bowerman, Mr. Gray committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Shove Chapel Colorado College, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Burton officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. Gray was born Sept. 9, 1911, in Presho, S.D., and grew up in Spring Green, Wis. He moved to Colorado Springs for his health and attended North Junior High School.

He attended the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado before graduating from Colorado College in 1934. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity while at CC.

After graduating from college, he married Marietta Sinton, whom he met while at CC. Mrs. Gray died in 1981.

Mr. Gray was an accountant for the Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co. accounting firm in Denver before joining Sinton Dairy.

He was on the board of directors of the Milk Industry Foundation and Quality Chekd Diary Products Association, and was a member of the Allied Dairy Association.

He served on the boards of directors of First National Bank of Pueblo, Colorado Springs National Bank, Exchange National Bank and Mountain Banks Ltd.

Mr. Gray also served on the board of directors of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and headed its Commerce Development Committee. He was a former president of the Colorado Springs Rotary Club.

He was a member of the board of trustees of the Museum of Western Mining and Industry.

Mr. Gray served on the State Compensation Committee in the administration of Gov. John Love and was chairman of the United Fund "Go Club." He was elected as one of five regional vice chairmen of the Colorado Public Expenditure Council in 1980.

He was a member and director of the Broadmoor Golf Club and a member of the El Paso, Cheyenne Mountain County, Garden of the Gods and Sanborn Ranch Duck clubs. He was also a volunteer fund raiser for the Pioneer Museum, Penrose Hospitals and CC.

Survivors are his mother, Irma Hill Gray of Spring Green; two sons, David "Mac" of Colorado Springs and John II of Tripoli, Libya; two daughters, Deborah Crouch of Jacksonville, Fla., and Taffy McLaughlin of Colorado Springs and Sandy Hook, Conn.; and 11 grandchildren.
